The new Product Recall Guidelines were developed with other trade associations and will act as a best-practice guide to assist businesses in dealing effectively with the potentially damaging situation of product recall.

Kevin Swoffer, head of technical services for the BRC said: 'Product recall is a highly complex process and knowledge and experience of it across the supply chain varies widely. The BRC has, with its members, produced comprehensive guidelines to assist those businesses that require guidance and advice.

'As retailers we have direct contact with consumers in the event of a product recall. The effectiveness of a product recall is dependent upon all those in the supply chain working together to minimise risk to the consumer.'
