Sainsbury's re-introduces English garlic

Garlic bulbs grown in the UK have hit the shelves at Sainsbury's this week.

The availability of home-grown garlic, said Sainsbury's, is another example of the changing climate in the UK and the introduction of new cultivation methods.

Producers in the UK have managed to grow commercial volumes of garlic for the first time in seven years. Not only is it British, it is available two weeks earlier than growers expected due to the unexpected warm spell.

Grown in the fertile, sandy loam soils of Lincolnshire, English garlic is hand selected and trimmed to ensure optimum quality.

Russell Crowe, Sainsbury's garlic buyer, said: “We are really excited to be the first supermarket to sell English garlic bulbs. It has taken years of hard work to develop and grow the English garlic to a standard that our customers would expect.

“This unique garlic has an exceptional flavour with a slightly sweeter taste and a stronger smell and the texture is much firmer than the standard garlic found in store.”

English Garlic will be the first vegetable to have an English flag on the label of the packaging, to show customers the origin. The garlic will be available for eight weeks in selected Sainsbury's stores, priced at 79p per pack.

All imported garlic will be taken off the shelves while English garlic is on sale, said Sainsbury's.
