Emma Ruddock of Wealmoor boosts Tesco's Mango Week efforts

The store gave away free samples to customers after its research showed 40 per cent of people who try mango for the first time go on to become regular buyers.

The campaign encouraged shoppers to taste mangoes for the first time, as well as providing recipes, advice on how to slice the fruit, and information on the many varieties available in the UK.

Kirsty Saunders, commercial operations executive at Tesco, said: "So far, the scheme has been a fantastic success. Mangoes are still seen as an unknown phenomenon by some people. They are reluctant to pay for something they may not like and don't know how to use.

Working hard handing out fruit and chatting to shoppers was Emma Ruddock (pictured) from supplier Wealmoor.

"This is an excellent opportunity to get mangoes in front of customers," said Mark Horton of Wealmoor and the Mango Association which ran Mango Week. "It's a big seller in many other parts of the world, and so we want to do all that we can to spread the message to the UK. "

A Tesco spokesman told freshinfo, last week's promotion was so successful the store hopes to run further mango promotions at different times throughout the year.
