It is going to be quite a task replacing a man who has almost single-handedly represented the UK's fresh produce industry on every issue and at every important trade meeting around the world for 11 years.

The list of credentials needed to be the next chief executive of the FPC will be a long one, including the ability to be an accomplished diplomat, politician, public speaker, technical expert and sophisticate.

Dealing with all sectors of this industry is only one part of the equation. The new ceo is charged not only with promoting the industry, but also protecting it from unnecessary and/or ill-conceived legislation, and this will bring him/her into contact with people from many walks of life, with varied perspectives on fresh produce.

A voracious appetite for work is an absolute pre-requisite. Globe-trotting comes with the job ñ the international standing of the FPC owes much to the selfless dedication of its ceo to furthering the cause of the UK trade in all corners of the world.

The FPC has a small, dedicated team in Peterborough and their work provides this industry with the information it needs to survive in the labyrinth of red tape that is European law. As a prime example, the story on page 5 cannot be ignored ñ it has potentially dire consequences for the UK industry at all levels. The FPC will not allow it to be brushed aside this time.

I have written before in this column that Doug Henderson's value to this industry has been widely under-estimated. He will continue to serve once the position is no longer his and says his decision to step down is purely to retire. Finding a successor is none the easier for the high standards he has set.
