Plenty more for the trade to think about again this week, with reports suggesting trouble at mill in the year to come.

It would be easy to take the view that the Brice brothers are getting out of the industry at just the right time. But, while I would like to congratulate them on their retirement, I do not believe for one minute that all is rotten in the world of produce.

This is without a doubt an extremely resilient industry, one which has battled through everything governments, customers and the elements have thrown at it for many years.

Another above-average increase in wages, a hike in fuel prices and the reported stubborn resistance to a healthy diet of yet another sub-sector of our society will all therefore be water off a duck's back.

We all know that this industry is here for a long time to come, but what we don't necessarily have a full grasp of is the likely shape of the industry in the future. We can guess, some with more informed minds than others, but there will be twists and turns a-plenty before anyone can say “I told you so”.

The Journal has served this industry in all its guises ñ and glory ñ for 108 years this month and we expect to continue as the preferred daily ñ through freshinfo.com ñ and weekly source of cross-industry news, views and data for many more.

This may not be the healthiest industry in the world financially, but in terms of the health benefits for society, it has no equal. We are proud of the part the Journal is able to play within that.
