Philip Green is rumoured to be considering making a bid for Safeway

Philip Green, the entrepreneur interested in buying Safeway, has asked for and received fresh financial information on the group.

Green, who has been cleared to buy the supermarket chain since March, has surprised city analysts who believed that he had lost interest.

When asked whether he was interested in buying the group. Green said: “By asking for the information it means I'm looking at it. There's nothing wrong with that, is there?”

One analyst said: “Of course Green could be having a bit of fun, but there seems little point in wasting everyone's time, including his own.”

Meanwhile, Morrisons has also requested and received new information ahead of making its renewed offer. One source close to Morrisons said: “There are probably more legitimate reasons for Safeway to give us the information.”
