Solanum is aiming to give children an insight into the benefit of vegetables

Solanum has teamed up with Waitrose in a bid to help children learn about more vegetables.

The company is launching a four-stage education initiative that will give children the opportunity to learn about how potatoes get from the field to the plate.

Twenty-nine pupils from Duxford Primary School, Cambridgeshire will visit a Waitrose store on November 6 where they will spend the day in work group sessions with personnel from Solanum and Waitrose.

Solanum commercial manager Laura Brown-Waite has played a key role in organising the event. She said: “Encouraging children to explore potatoes and other vegetables through hands-on activities in-store and on farms is key to increasing their awareness and their consumption in the short and long-term. By working in conjunction with Waitrose and Russell Smith Farms we aim to give the children an insight into the benefits of potatoes and other vegetables.”

After the busy day the children's homework will be to produce a recipe with a drawing incorporating potatoes and vegetables and their efforts will be posted on the ëplough to plate' website www.watirose.com/potatoes.

The final three key stages of the programme will take place in 2004.
