Puerto Rican mangoes make early start

The Puerto Rican mango season has had an early start and first exports are expected to arrive in Europe on December 17.

Martex Farms in Santa Isabel has managed to extend it season this year to a full nine-months until mid-September, which could make it their longest season on record.

Birmingham based Minor, Weir and Willis (MWW) has worked closely with Martex Farms over a number of years to realise the full potential of Puerto Rican mangoes.

Sudhir Mehta, commercial director of MWW, said: “We are delighted to be receiving fruit so early. This is the result of the exceptional technical expertise at Martex Farms. Expectations are high for the season.”

Martex has spent the last 12 months raising awareness of their country's mangoes across Europe with success. Activities have included in-store tastings and a competition to win a holiday to Puerto Rico.
