McNicol: honoured

The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society has honoured Ronnie McNicol, leading plant breeder and managing director of Redbridge's berry breeding programme Redeva, with a Caley award.

At its 195th annual general meeting on Wednesday, the society presented a series of awards for distinguished service to horticulture in Scotland. McNicol was presented with the Dr Patrick Neill Medal instituted by a bequest in 1851 to honour a botanist or cultivator to reward his services to the soft fruit industry.

The society cited McNicol's contribution to the current prosperity of the UK soft-fruit industry, in particular his raspberry cultivars.

On receiving the award, he commented: “To be recognised by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society in this way is a real honour for me. The industry has developed significantly in recent years and I am delighted to have been a part of that. The challenge now is to continue to drive innovation and that's what we're aiming to achieve at Redeva.”
