The use of pesticides will come increasingly into the spotlight as consumers are continuing to show concern over the perceived levels being used, according to Philip Effingham, chairman of the Brassica Growers' Association

Effingham was opening a packed Brassica Conference at Wellesbourne on Wednesday and he also broke the news that the mass of vegetable r&d would be changing after the decision to move HRI to Warwick University from April. Welcoming the strategy, he believes it will provide a boost to much-needed research on the use of automation and robotics in the brassica industry.

Meanwhile, looking to the Spring, he told freshinfo that the deficit of moisture still being felt after last year's long-hot summer meant it will be a difficult start to the season for all crops. In the light of recent press reports about business changing hands at retail level, he also expects the industry to continue to take a close look at its margins based on increasing pressure from the multiples.
