Israeli peppers put in strong performance

Agrexco's Israeli capsicum exports are nearly 10 per cent up so far this season compared to the same period last year.

Agrexco has exported 11,600t of capsicum from the start of the season in November 2003 to date, an increase of 1,000t over the same period last year. Yoram Sela, the exporter's capsicum product manager, said that sales revenues so far amounted to €5.5m, and that the company plans to export 24,000t of capsicum in total this season, 2,000t more than during the previous season. He estimated sales revenues at €60m for the whole season. The Israeli season usually winds down in April or May.

Sela suggested that the quality of capsicum from other source countries is inferior this year due to climatic problems and this has given high-quality Israseli supplies a marketplace advantage.

He added that the strengthening of the euro has significantly improved the financial prospects for growers of trade with western Europe. However, the situation is less favourable for US trade due to the decline of the dollar against the euro. "This might prompt us to increase the export volume of capsicums to western Europe," said Sela.

Agrexco has introduced a wide range of packaging, and a new family pack containing a variety of colours of mini capsicum for cooking, in a 500g package.
