Peas make Royal stand

The Processed Vegetable Growers Association has hailed the first ever appearance of its Yes Peas! stand at the Royal Show as a success. The stand, prominently placed by the main ring, told the story of pea growing and featured Miss Pea. Crowds of visitors were entertained with exuberant cookery demonstrations by Yorkshire Television's new celebrity chef Rachel Green, who conjured up all sorts of delicious dishes with peas specially for the Royal Show, including pea ice cream.

Meanwhile, this season’s pea crop for freezing was brought on early by fine weather in May, but is now falling victim to the more changeable conditions, said the PVGA’s Tim Mudge. "It is very frustrating for growers and they are hoping for an improvement," he said. "Original estimates of the yields of the crop for freezing in 2004 are likely to be revised downwards."
