Redruth brassica producer David Simmons has been awarded the RASE Excellence in Practical Farming Award.

Simmons and its 40 Cornish growers supply the UK supermarkets with a variety of brassicas, including cauliflower, cabbage and purple sprouting broccoli. David Simmonms is also a ceral farmer.

The award, presented by the Duke of Gloucester, is given to a producer that, in the eyes of the judges, is "setting the pace in modern agriculture". Emphasis is also placed on the creation of a climate of commercial awareness, technical efficiency and international competitiveness.

Judges said: "David Simmons is an excellent communicator and comes across as being a complete master of the business. We find him thoroughly deserving of an Excellence in Practical Farming Award."
