The ongoing Indian truckers strike is unlikely to impact heavily on UK supplies, importers said.

Hundreds of thousands of truckers across India are on strike to protest against the introduction of a new service tax.

However, while the strike is disrupting all aspects of industry in India, including the food sector, importers in the UK are not anticipating too many problems.

Avnish Malde, commercial director with Wealmoor, said: “It hasn’t impacted on the UK, mainly because there’s not too much coming in from India at the moment.”

He said the main product seasons, for mangoes and grapes, were over and at the moment there was only really pomegranates coming into the UK, and, as yet, they were unaffected.
