The weather has caused havoc for the pea season with growers reporting significantly lower yields.

Estimates indicate the crop will be down around 20 to 30 per cent on expected targets, said Martin Riggall, chief executive of the Processed Vegetable Growers’ Association.

The entire season has been dogged by bad weather said Riggall, from drilling through to harvest. “Wet weather at the beginning of the year caused disruption for drilling, and the dry, hot spell in May and June caused stress to the crop and it’s been wet ever since,” he said.

The wet conditions extended the length of the harvest, which has added costs on the labour front. “The last two to three weeks have been diabolical and some growers in Yorkshire couldn’t even get machinery into the fields to harvest. As a result, some fields have had to be abandoned,” he added.
