Stockings down for citrus

Santa is failing to get citrus fruit into children’s stockings according to a leading fresh produce supplier.

Redbridge is now urging parents to help encourage their children to eat more citrus fruit following research which revealed a decline in the traditional citrus stocking fillers.

The company found that while 82 per cent of the parents it polled put a stocking out at Christmas, traditional fillers such as satsumas and nuts are being replaced with sweets, chocolates, CDs, videos, perfume, jewellery, toys and games.

Steve Harrison, md of Redbridge Fresh Services, said: “Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and promoting a healthy diet is national priority.

“We are committed to supporting the Department of Health’s 5 A DAY campaign and the national Fruit and Vegetable Scheme and at this time of year, eating more vitamin C is a great way to help combat common colds and flu.

“What better way to encourage your children to keep healthy and eat more fruit than by leaving an orange surprise in their stocking as part of their 5 A DAY fill?”
