Heading for new waters

Compagnie Fruitière shipping subsidiary Africa Express Line (AEL) is switching arrival ports from Dover to Portsmouth for its West African banana and pineapple service to the UK.

Brian Madderson, md of Dover stevedore George Hammond, said the switch is disappointing. “We tried to accommodate their requirements by getting the harbour board to invest in new cranes and temperature-controlled facilities, and we thought we had met all AEL’s needs by appropriating the berth for their use on specific days,” he said.

“So we hope that this is more of a trial separation than a final divorce.”
