A Greek grape producer has now added red sultanas to its product range.

Costas Lappas, from producers Tzelepi in Corinth, said: “The grape is firmer, seedless and more resistant to rain.”

He said the harvest was good, pointing out Greece has not suffered from the bad weather that has affected Spain.

The vineyards yielded a harvest of 55,000 tonnes of grapes. However, he said he is also well aware of the concerns of Greek grape-growers and farmers about the withdrawal of EU subsidies next year.

The Greek state is not in a position to provide the necessary financial compensation and “this is affecting the farmers”, Lappas added at Fruit Logistica in Berlin last week.
