Bartlett wins eco award

Airdrie-based potato and root-vegetable supplier Albert Bartlett & Sons has been presented with another environmental accolade - the Vibes award for large businesses and the overall top national award for 2005. Vibes recognises and rewards the efforts of Scottish businesses to become more efficient and competitive through improving environmental performance and sustainability.

Bartlett’s is the UK’s largest supplier of root vegetables and opened its 56 acre Airdrie site in November 2003, less than a mile from its original, 50-year old Lanarkshire facility.

This commitment to the local area is matched by the company’s commitment to the local environment. The building’s design makes every effort to limit its impact, including an industry-leading on site water treatment plant that recycles the water used in the production process. Some 70 per cent of this water is sourced from the factory roof and the remaining 30 per cent is provided by borehole, mains water was only used in the commissioning of the site.

Bartlett was presented with its award on December 6, 2005 at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. Following this domestic success Bartlett will represent Scotland at the 2007 European Environmental Awards.

Colin Campbell, Bartlett’s Production & HR Director said: “Vibes is an excellent scheme that rewards companies which realise that implementing environment-friendly schemes is good for business. We are delighted Vibes has recognised our efforts to promote environmental efficiency and were delighted to collect the national award on top of the large business category award.”

Frazer Scott, Vibes chair said: “The quality of entrants was again excellent this year. Vibes is all about companies using environmental initiatives and business savvy to increase profits, which is obviously good for them and good for the long-term future of Scotland.”
