A leading provider of environmentally conscious insect pest control has announced that it has been granted a quarantine license from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Exosect is now able to research the control of the Mediterranean fruit fly at its new laboratories in Winchester.

The insect pest attacks more than 250 types of fruit, nuts and vegetables across the world.

It is thought to originate from tropical regions of Africa and it is now a widespread pest in the southern hemisphere and southern Europe.

Martin Brown, managing direct of Exosect, said: “Once a fruit fly species takes hold of a crop it can cost millions to eradicate the problem and the cost to the grower in lost produce is immense.

“Prior to the Defra license our product development trials had to be carried out at external premises. However, as part of our recent expansion we have now established our own specialist laboratories.”
