Tenderstem broccoli will be marketed as a summer health food this season, perfect for those on a holiday diet.

The variety should be promoted alongside other dark green vegetables as part of the 5 A DAY and Eat in Colour campaigns, according to Dr Juliet Gray, a registered public health nutritionist.

“Tenderstem broccoli is an excellent vegetable,” she said. “It’s easy to eat large amounts because it is so sweet and tasty, and it has a low GI. If lightly cooked, so that it still has some crunch, it makes a really satisfying meal that can help you feel fuller for longer.”

Tenderstem can be blanched, microwaved, boiled, steamed and grilled, and the number of ways that it can be cooked makes it a very convenient product.

“Tenderstem is a great salad vegetable too, lightly cooked or raw,” Gray added. The variety can also be eaten raw as a quick snack with accompanying dips.
