Toms look prettier pink

A new pink tomato variety will be produced commercially for the first time this year by Arava-based agricultural screener Teva Tari.

Michael Ofran, director of research and development at Tera Tavi, said: “This is a very special tomato.

“The taste was fantastic the first time that we grew them. But all the tomatoes had splits at the top because they had brix levels of more than 10 - a lot of sugars. So we tried packing the tomatoes before they had reached full colour. This means that there is no cracking, and the product gets its colour after a week.”

Teva Tari has exclusive access to the pink tomato variety.

The company trials 120 tomato varieties on a two-hectare site. Ofran is also hoping to develop Piccolo so it can be grown more productively in the Israeli climate and lengthen the shelf life of tomato stems to improve the quality of cherry-on-the-vine varieties exported from Israel to the UK.
