Honduran eyes EU opening

Honduran exporters of Asian veg set their sights on Europe at Fruit Logistica 2007.

Speaking at the event, Mónica Estévez of FIDE, a private export promotional body, said:

“We want to promote our quality produce on the European market and to find sales partners.”

Most of the Central American country’s fruit and vegetable production is already EurepGAP-certified. As well as grapefruit, melons, plantains and sweet potatoes, the five companies represented at the Berlin event displayed a wide range of Asian vegetables, including Japanese aubergines, Indian bitter melons, and Thai okra.

Honduras has been growing exotic vegetables for almost a decade to supply Asian communities in the US.

But, while the US and its Central American neighbours are still its major trading partners, with a population of 7.3 million, European buyers and in particular the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium are becoming increasingly important to Honduras, Estévez said.
