Fresh produce exports are a priority for Pakistan, according to an official in its Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) this week, and the government has taken a number of steps to increase its exports to international markets.

More than 36 varieties of vegetables and condiments including potato, cabbage, cauliflower, turnip, green chillies and onion, as well as dry spices, are produced in the country and exported abroad, he said.

Major markets include Asian countries, Europe, Africa, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

The area under fruit plantation in Pakistan increased by 22 per cent during 2005-06 and fruit production showed a 21.1 per cent increase in the same period as a result of favourable weather conditions.

Acreage for vegetables and condiments increased by 19.2 per cent and production was up by 12.7 per cent.

Fruit, vegetables and juices have a remarkable share in the Pakistan exports chart, making Rs.9928.6 million profit last year and showing a 52.9-per-cent increase, the official added.
