Fresh produce delivered by road this weekend will have to battle through the worst May Day Bank Holiday traffic jams ever.
The RAC is warning that the number of vehicles on the road on Sunday and Monday will soar by 150 per cent, inevitably causing traffic snarl-ups and miles of general motoring misery.
Traffic jams are expected to peak on Friday, however, as drivers flee the workplace, and Monday is likely to bring more of the same as people return home.
The motoring association estimates that motorists will drive 1.8 billion more miles in total than they did during the May Day weekend last year. The M25, the M1 through Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire and the M6 around Birmingham are singled out as "congestion hotspots", and the RAC is urging motorists to allow additional time for their journeys.
