Sainsbury’s scooped the Grocer of the Year award for the second year running at The Grocer Gold Awards, held on Thursday night at The Dorchester in London.

Sponsored by GS1, Headcount, Disney and Deloitte, the highly contested awards recognise the crème de la crème of grocery retail, on issues including financial performance, customer service, innovation, competitive pricing and product offering.

Musgrave, which owns convenience stores Budgens and Londis, took home the best Consumer Initiative gong for British Food Fortnight, while Sainsbury’s was a double winner, receiving not only the overall prize but also an accolade for its Taste the Difference line in the Best Own Label Range.

Re:fresh Convenience Retailer of the Year Tates took home the award for Best Independent Retail Chain, while Re:fresh Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year Waitrose won the gong for Best Business Initiative for its regional fresh produce.

Tesco was voted Britain’s Favourite Supermarket, and Brakes Best Wholesaler. Ocado, the online retail branch of Waitrose, scooped the Best Online Retailer of the Year accolade.
