Israel breaks pepper record

According to Yoram Sela, capsicum product manager at Agrexco, sendings from his firm reached 34,000t, almost all routed to western Europe. Sela said that during the very cold days in January, yields were smaller than expected and some yields were of inferior quality. But later in the season, quality improved and yields were high, reaching an average of 24t an acre.

Arava Growers is said to have exported 12,000t and Edom UK 9,000t. Some 400ha of new capsicum production area will be added for the 2008 season, enabling Israeli exporters to send 110,000-120,000t in 2008. Trade sources commented that growers’ income from the crop averaged £1.05 a kilo this season - the highest they have ever achieved.
