Herbs will be a focus for Agrexco in the upcoming season

israel’s primary fresh produce exporter, Agrexco, plans to export 360,000 tonnes of fruit, salads and vegetables during the 2007-08 season - a 10 per cent rise on levels recorded in the season just ending.

According to preliminary estimates, anticipated sales revenues in 2007-08 will total nearly

€500 million (£338m). This does not include sendings of flowers or plant propagation material.

Yaakov (Malchy) Malinovitch, deputy managing director of Agrexco and head of its marketing division, said the company plans to reduce its shipments of fresh and processed products to the US in view of the dollar exchange rate and the high costs of transportation, “and will focus its marketing activities in Europe”.

“Agrexco is more strict than ever before on the high standards of its products, supplying top-quality products, adhering to the safe-food aspect, and working by the book to apply environment-friendly cultivation and post-harvest treatment procedures,” said Malinovitch, adding that more accurate estimates of the company’s likely export volume will be available in September, when the new export season begins.

Amos Orr, Agrexco UK’s md, said the country can expect to see a large uplift in volume as one of the company’s largest markets. “We will see nice increases across the board in the UK, but particularly in peppers and herbs and in our exotic and other fruit lines,” said Orr. The main reason for the uplift is increased plantings.
