The port of Rotterdam Authority has unveiled plans to develop a new fruit-handling centre on its southern bank, to cope with growth in container traffic of fresh produce.

Capacity to expand the existing Fruitport on the north bank of the port at Merwehaven is limited, so the authority is looking to a new site on the south to allow for more short-sea, inland and rail-transport container handling.

The port authority has signed a letter of intent with stevedoring companies Seabrex and Kloosterboer, which forms the basis for “the continuity of the fruit cluster in terms of investment, logistical innovation and more long-term commercial contracts”. As yet, no completion date has been set.

In connection with the expansion move, the two stevedoring companies have already joined forces with Kloosterboer taking a 50 per cent stake in Seabrex. “The companies will become the pivot of a new Fruitport, supplemented with all kinds of related commercial activity,” the port authority in a statement.
