Apple and grape bags at UK branches of fast-food chain McDonald’s will exclusively feature Kentish apples this winter, grown by John Collingwood.

He will supply 7.5 tonnes of Royal Gala weekly until February in order to fill 77,000 fruit bags. The third generation producer farms 500 acres with his wife and brother and also produces pears and cherries.

Collingwood said: “It is great to see McDonald’s supporting the British apple industry, and its scale means it will be able to share the delicious flavour of Kent apples with its many customers across the UK.”

McDonald’s has been offering the fresh fruit bags for five years. The 80g packets are part of the franchise chain’s healthier Happy Meals, which are specifically targeted at children.

Dean McKenna, head of supply chain at McDonald’s, said: “English apples are renowned for being the best in the world. We are committed to sourcing as much of our produce as locally as possible and supporting UK agriculture.”
