Fruit delivery driver Brett Carpenter died following an assault on Tuesday night in Portsmouth.

Paramedics gave first aid to the 36-year-old but he was later pronounced dead at the Queen Alexandra Hospital from extensive head injuries. Police officers believe he was trying to intervene in a domestic row in the street.

Three people have since been arrested in connection with the assault.

A well-known face around the country’s wholesale markets since he started working in the industry at the age of 21, Brett followed his father into the fruit delivery business. He worked for Asbury Haulage in Kent.

Colin Goldup, a close friend and colleague from Staplehurst Transit in Maidstone, told freshinfo: “Brett was a gentleman and a really nice guy. He was a great friend to me - a real Robin Hood character.”

Our condolences to Brett’s friends and family.
