George Hammond has won AEO status

Marine and port services provider at the Port of Dover, George Hammond plc, has become the first port-service company in the UK to win full Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status. The certification encompasses customs simplifications, security and safety.

AEO is a new system being introduced in the EU for advanced notification of goods either entering or leaving the union. All members of the supply chain can apply, from manufacturers to exporters, shippers, customs agents, freight forwarders and importers.

The certification won by Hammond incorporates its fresh-produce handling at Dover Cargo Terminal. It also covers the port’s deep-sea pilotage, forwarding, ships’ agency and motor-launch activities.

Brian Madderson, md of George Hammond plc, said: “This certification process is definitely not for the faint-hearted. We had no fewer than five separate inspection visits from HM Revenue & Customs over a four-month period. AEO status will give customers hard evidence of our total professionalism.”
