Aubergines account for 40 per cent of Bangladeshi vegetable production

The UK has been recognised for its work helping Bangladeshi aubergine farmers with an award.

The University of Greenwich’s Natural Resource Institute in London has scooped an International Award of Recognition for its work in controlling pests on the vegetable.

Some 40 per cent of vegetable production in Bangladesh is accounted for by aubergines - however, 40 per cent of production costs in growing these crops is invested in pesticide use.

But by controlling pests by other means, farmers have massively reduced their costs and can produce the crop all year round.

The university will be presented with the award in the US at the end of the month.

Group leader Dr Alan Cork told thisislondon.co.uk: “It is our goal to see the whole region following the example that has been set so that all farmers can reap the many rewards."
