A sacked former Marks & Spencer employee leaked an internal memo stating redundancy plans as he was “despaired” with the retailer’s direction.

Tony Goode leaked proposals to severely cut redundancy pay to The Times last August as he feared the premium retailer was planning major job cuts, an employment tribunal in London heard yesterday.

The company identified the source of the article by tracing Goode’s company email correspondence with journalists.

Goode forwarded an internal email outlining plans to make cuts of up to 25 per cent in staff and declared the company’s behaviour as a “sham”.

In January this year, M&S announced that around 1,200 employees would face redundancy.

Goode, who was sacked for gross misconduct last September, had worked for M&S for 25 years and earned more than £40,000 a year. The hearing continues.
