Authorities and agencies in Lincolnshire are looking into the establishment of a rail hub in Spalding.

South Holland District Council has commissioned Intermodality LLP to find out whether there is a need or desire for a rail-connected hub in the Spalding area. The council is working with Lincolnshire County Council, the regional assembly, the East Midlands Development Agency and Lincolnshire Enterprise on the fact-finding project.

The South Holland district surrounding Spalding generates a huge amount of traffic - mainly of fresh produce - which accounts for some 1,000 lorry movements daily. Most of the major retailers have expressed at least an interest in making greater use of rail, but so far the Spalding area has been lacking in the appropriate facilities for loading and discharging freight trains.
