Tesco sees winter veg boom

The UK’s increasingly damp summer is prompting shoppers to swap salads for typical winter foods, according to Tesco, which has seen sales on winter produce lines boom.

Instead of barbecue food and salads, many Brits are turning to pies, soup and puddings accompanied by winter vegetables to cheer themselves up.

Compared with June when the UK enjoyed sunny weather, July has seen big volume increases at Tesco stores across the UK for products such as potatoes and carrots.

Roasting potato sales are up 450 per cent, parsnips 120 per cent, swedes 90 per cent and carrots also saw a 62 per cent increase in sales.

Tesco root vegetable buyer Jonathan Corbett said: “This is the time of year when salads and barbecue foods are usually top of the shopping list but we are seeing unexpectedly high demand for foods normally associated with winter.

“But the miserable weather has prompted many shoppers to turn to comfort foods to cheer themselves up and chase away the rainy weather blues."

With weather forecasters predicting further downpours through August it looks very much as if winter fare will continue to be served up around the country for the foreseeable future.

“Normally we would reduce orders on winter favourites from our suppliers during the summer months but based on July sales and with the forecast looking ominous for next month we have ordered extra supplies,” said Corbett.
