Spar UK Ltd has renewed its support for the National Social for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and Children 1st charities to 2010 with an ambitious fundraising target.

Spar retailers at 2,600 stores and employees at Spar wholesalers have raised £1.6 million for NSPCC and Children 1st to date with a target of £2 million for the two children’s charities by May 2010.

Spar employees got involved in a variety of activities to raise funds for the charities. Staff held Stop for Tea parties, promoted the NSPCC’s Letter from Santa to customers, and placed collection tins on checkout counters. They also supported Children 1st’s Kilts for Kids Day, and asked customers for a donation to sign giant cards in stores celebrating Spar’s 50th birthday.

NSPCC head of corporate partnerships Tracy Griffin said: “I’m delighted that SPAR has chosen to support NSPCC and Children 1st for another year. We have been very impressed with the dedication and ongoing commitment of SPAR employees in retail stores and across the whole business.

“It’s vital that companies and communities work together to help end cruelty to children. Spar’s large network of local stores can also help raise awareness of the NSPCC Helpline and Children 1st helpline Parentline, so that anyone worried about a child knows how to report their concerns.”

Spar stores also ran special promotions on selected products along with branded in-store displays about the partnership to help raise awareness of the charities among local customers.
