Consumers have been shopping more locally because of the snow

Deliveries are still managing to get through to all Budgens and Londis stores despite the adverse weather conditions, and retailers are seeing significant increases in sales as shoppers choose to shop locally.

Some stores have seen dramatic sales increases, up to more than 80 per cent on a normal day, with shoppers stocking up on core products and fresh lines such as meat and produce.

Terry Caton, who owns three Londis stores in Chesterfield, Derbyshire adds: “We have been really busy over the last 48 hours. We are still trying to keep stock of bread and milk, which have more than tripled in sales over the last 24 hours. The guys in the supply chain have done a fantastic job getting stock out to us over the last two days.”

Budgens in Chalfont St Peter was waiting for a fresh delivery of eggs on Thursday having sold out after one of its busiest-ever days. Store manager Keith Morley says: “The day before the snow we were very busy. People were panic buying a bit. There were nearly twice as many people as usual. Then when the snow came there weren't too many cars in the car park but there were quite a lot of people on foot. They have been shopping locally.”
