Traders celebrated root vegetables

Traders on London’s Portobello and Golborne Road markets linked up with New Covent Garden Market for the second time to celebrate home-grown roots last week.

The two-day event, held last Friday and Saturday in the biting cold, saw vats of a winter toot vegetable stew being cooked up on the market and free samples handed out to passers-by, along with the recipe, provided by Alan Rosenthal of Stewed!.

The hot treat featured carrots, swede, parsnips, sweet potatoes and salsify, cooked with saffron, thyme, paprika and cumin seeds and topped with feta cheese, all sourced from on or around the market.

Traders including Maureen Peck and Tony Glasgow had created displays for their root vegetable offer, topped with patriotic bunting.

The event was the second in a series of produce-related events held by Portobello and Golborne Road markets in partnership with NCGM, with the next set to be a celebration of spring greens in April.

Zeenat Anjari, business development manager at NCGM, told freshinfo: “The day has gone really well and people have been stopping by to taste the stew and have been surprised by the taste; some have even been asking if the vegetables are organic. We wanted to make root vegetables and what could have been a simple work-a-day stew into something more luxurious.”
