English aubergines hit shelves

English aubergines have hit supermarket shelves at the start of a promising season as the product continues to grow in the market.

The Yorkshire grown aubergines, supplied by English Village Salads Ltd (EVS), have come on stream and will be available until November.

EVS is in trials with Yorkshire growers - who will celebrate a decade growing the salad product next year - to produce more unusual looking variants of aubergines, such as striped, white and baby aubergines.

EVS, based in North Yorkshire, specialises in the production of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and aubergines and is on a drive to supply locally produced British produce.

EVS marketing manager Kelly Hill told freshinfo: “The season has started really positively. Quality and availability are very good.

“Aubergines are bought by loyal shoppers who use the vegetables in a versatile way."

She added: “Compared with other mainstream vegetables in the UK, it has a relatively small consumer base. However with the rise of widening food trends focussing on recipes from areas such as North Africa and the Middle East, we expect to see good growth in the UK aubergine market.”

Research studies at the Institute of Biology of São Paulo State University, Brazil showed that aubergines are effective in the treatment of high cholesterol as well as being a good source of essential B vitamins and minerals.
