Stripy Aubergine won one of the top prizes at the event

Abel & Cole’s stripy aubergine, supplied by Adrian Izzard of Wild Country Organics, has won the prize for best vegetable at the Soil Association’s Organic Food Awards 2012.

“These specific aubergines have a lovely white flesh so there’s a beautiful distinction when you cut them open,” explained Izzard.

Now in its 24th year, this year's Organic Food Awards were decided over three days at the Duke of Cambridge organic pub in London by an expert judging panel of food critics, restaurateurs, broadcasters and chefs, including Hardeep Singh Kohli and Jo Wood.

Shillingford Organics’ beetroot and kohlrabi was the runner up in the vegetable category, and a flowery herb salad produced by Maddocks Farm Organics was victorious in the salad category.
