Tesco's Emma Bonny shows how the Avozilla stacks up against a normal sized avocado

Tesco will exclusively stock the rare South African-grown 'Avozilla' avocado variety across its UK stores from tomorrow (August 31).

The variety, which is grown on just four trees by one of the world's largest suppliers of avocados, is up to five times bigger than conventional varieties.

Since the start of the year, Tesco salad buyer Emma Bonnysaid the UK's largest retailer has seen avocado sales rise by over 30 per cent.

She said: “The Avozilla has a fantastic taste with a rich, juicy, buttery texture, and creamy flavour. The ripe fruit is an attractive vivid green colour – different from the darker coloured smaller variety – and its thick skin can actually be used as a serving bowl for guacamole.

'We believe the Avozilla will appeal to shoppers who are looking for value for money, but especially large families.”

The Avozilla is seven inches long, weighs up to 1.3kg and will retail for £3.
