The Co-operative has had to withdraw some mislabelled lettuces

The Co-operative has withdrawn several mislabelled little gem lettuces after a customer noticed the red tractor label and Union Jack flag on packaging marked “produce of Spain”.

Richard Cattell, head of marketing at the Red Tractor fresh produce scheme, said the labelling was down to human error, and did notlook good from a consumer’s perspective.

Cattell said the supplier in question is being dealt with, and the incident does not represent a change in standards for the Red Tractor scheme.

A spokesperson for The Co-operative said: “We can confirm that a small quantity of our own-brand little gem lettuce, which originated in Spain, was incorrectly labelled as being from the UK and Red Tractor.

“Accurate customer information on labelling is extremely important to us and our customers, and, as soon as the error came to light, we withdrew the incorrectly labelled lettuces, and are investigating this incident with our supplier to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future.”

The description of the Red Tractor logo on its website states that produce is “fully traceable back to independently inspected farms in the UK”.
