eden's plantable wrapping paper

Eden's wrapping paper with embossed onion seeds

An innovative Christmas wrapping paper embedded with organic vegetable seeds can be planted after use to counter paper waste from the festive season.

Eden’s wrapping paper is available with either carrot, broccoli, chilli, tomato or onion seeds and is a combined effort from a seed supplier, a print factory and an innovation agency.

The seeds are certified by the Soil Association and are arranged in a linear sequence so vegetables grow in straight lines.

It is made from 100 per cent recycled paper and the inks in the dye are vegetable-based.

Layers of wrapping paper and tissue paper containing seeds are held together though an embossing process that doesn’t require glue, meaning the end product is completely biodegradable.

Each 45cm by 70cm sheet holds 700 seeds and can be buried in the garden after presents are unwrapped. It is available for £5 per sheet.

Producers have said that there are plans for herbs and flower lines to follow if demand is sufficient.

Last year, it was estimated that 227,000 miles of wrapping paper went to waste in the UK, enough to wrap around the world nine times. Eden’s wrapping paper offers a sustainable alternative to throwing it out.

The plantable wrapping paper is currently being promoted on crowd-funding website Kickstarter to generate more awareness and funds for the brand.
