Morrisons came out more expensive than its direct rivals on several baskets late last year, but analysis of this week’s selection of leading fresh produce lines shows the retailer to be more price competitive.

Asda is once again cheapest on the basket of 10 lines with a total cost of £8.85, figures from ProduceView reveal. However Morrisons is not far behind with a total of £9.70, moving it 5p ahead of Tesco. Sainsbury’s basket comes in at £10.39.

Leeds-based Asda is cheapest or joint-cheapest of the big four on every single line. The store has the outright lowest price on a pot of basil (£1), cucumbers (50p each), a Honeydew melon (£1.75) and a six-pack of tomatoes (75p).

There have been very few price movements in this week’s basket, with no changes at all in any of the big-four stores. The Co-operative has made two adjustments, with a kilo of sweet potatoes up 5p to £1.55 and the same weight of onions falling 35p to the round £1 point.

A look at individual lines shows that bananas continue at their ‘new normal’ price of 68p/kg in Tesco, Asda and Morrisons. The Fairtrade offer in Sainsbury’s and The Co-operative comes in at 79p and 99p respectively.

Asda’s 75p offer is lower than the standard £1 per pack for six tomatoes that is seen in other stores, while its 50p cucumber represents a 15p saving compared to both Tesco and Morrisons, and is 30p less than Sainsbury’s.
