cabbage

Price changes on this week’s basket have mostly been in a downward direction, figures from ProduceView reveal, with only one product moving up.

That product was Savoy cabbage, which Asda has taken off promotion with a 20p increase that means it is price-matching all of the other leading stores at 80p.

Morrisons has reduced the price of two lines in this week’s basket, with a penny shaved off a kilo of carrots to 89p and a cucumber dropped to 49p following a 16p reduction.

That has left Morrisons as the cheapest store on cucumbers this week, 1p less than Asda, and joint-cheapest on a kilo of carrots along with its Leeds-based rival.

Sainsbury’s, despite the added expense of selling Fairtrade bananas, has still taken 11p off the popular fruit to drop the price back down to 68p/kg, matching the other big-four supermarkets.

The only other change in this week’s basket sees Tesco reducing its carrot price by 4p.

Onion prices remain stable at between 90p and £1, sweet potatoes are on sale at either £1.28 or £1.50 depending on where you shop, and tomatoes are still at the round-pound price point, except at Asda, where they are just 75p.

So far there has not been a significant impact on prices as a result of the wet weather, but with rainfall continuing to hit farms there is a growing possibility that shortages could occur.
