Asda has said it will cut transport emissions by 60 per cent

Asda has bought 16 low-noise refrigeration units to help slash transport emissions by 60 per cent by 2015.

Fitted with specialised ‘Whisper’ technology, the SLXe Spectrum units combine low fuel consumption, reduced emissions and reduced sound levels to make them particularly suitable for urban deliveries.

Drivers will benefit from the training tool that is provided, which explains how to operate the technology as well as best practice advice on loading, unloading and fuel consumption.

Units are remotely connected to a third party data logger, allowing Asda to monitor operation and performance.

The UK’s second largest retailer bought the technology from transport operations manufacturer Thermo King.

“This is a great example of new thinking that will support our sustainability agenda and also considers environmentally friendly deliveries in our urban areas,” said Chris Hall, head of transport for Asda Logistics Services.

“We are always looking for new specifications that can add value to our operations. We are looking forward to seeing how these units perform.”

Steve Williams, UK sales manager at Thermo King said “whisper-quiet” technology, as seen in the SLXe Spectrum units, allows retailers to efficiently meet sustainability and emission targets.

He added: “Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important business factor and plays a significant role in our customers’ success.”

Thermo King manufactures transport temperature control systems for trailers, truck bodies, buses, ship containers and railway cars.
