The creation of a Chilean table grape committee is said to be imminent following a meeting by the country’s fruit exporter association Asoex to get the process underway. Speaking to FreshFruitPortal, Asoex president Edmundo Araya said the new institution will help the industry to face up to the challenges it faces.

He pointed out that in order to effectively industry-wide tackle issues such as the spread of European grapevine moth, Lobesia Botrana, required a united approach from growers, exporters and government as they were too big to deal with by individual companies and organisations.

Araya said the new committee is currently being put together and that companies and institutions from across the country had been invited to join. Asoex expects to have elected the first president and drawn up a work plan before the end of May.

Juan Carolus Brown, president of producer association Fedefruta said the move was good news for the table grape industry.
