MMD (Shipping Services) has announced a new transport partnership with a leading UK logistics company.

Gregory Distribution will take over responsibility for distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables handled by MMDat Portsmouth International Port from September 2014.

The family-owned logistics firm started in the south west of England nearly 100 years ago, and now operates from 17 sites as far afield as Scotland and West Cornwall, utilising over 500 trucks, 1,500 employees and a turnover of £140 million.

A spokesperson for MMD, which claims to handle around 70 per cent of the bananas eaten in the UK,said that as well as having access to new markets, MMD will also benefit through experienced staff transferring to Gregory Distribution. The new arrangement will see drivers continue to work from the Portsmouth International Port, and will be joined by Gregory drivers from its base in Chichester.

They added: 'MMD and Gregory will work together to develop new markets and better synergies between their two businesses, and the familiar Gregory Distribution livery will be seen on the vehicles whilst the MMD branding will continue to feature on the side of the trailers.'
