mushrooms

English football club Bungay Town are hoping that they've got their hands on some 'magic' mushrooms.

The Suffolk non-league side will be offering free punnets of mushrooms to supporters who attend their home match against Martham on Saturday (6 September).

The offer is part of Non-League Day, when clubs try to boost fan numbers.

Vice-chairman Shaun Cole told BBC Sport: 'We have a supplier of mushrooms so we thought, 'why not?' The former chairman is a mushroom grower.'

Last season, the Anglian Combination Division Two side gave fans 5p each to attend their game on Non-League Day, which was set up in 2010 by James Doe as a way of highlighting the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football.

Cole noted: 'We had a 60-70 per cent attendance increase on the day, and I would be delighted if we can get that again.'

Non-League Day has become an annual part of the football calendar when the professional clubs in the top two divisions have a weekend off for international fixtures.

But one imagines this is the first time a club has used fresh produce as an incentive to get fans through the turnstiles.
